The Chorus Stars in Munich’s New Khovanshchina

MUNICH — Modest Mussorgsky’s dark and difficult opera “Khovanshchina” has not often been performed in Munich. But Musical Director Kent Nagano chose the Russian work to usher in a new series featuring opera works by Russian composers. Mussorgsky never lived to see the premiere of this, his last opera. The version chosen by the Bavarian State Opera is the one Dmitri Shostakovich completed in 1959. Nagano put together a team led by Russian director, set and costume designer Dmitri Tscherniakov. He translates the struggle between old and new in 17th century Russia into a parable reflecting Russia’s current problems. (more…)
